Full-fat dairy products can provide unexpected health advantages.
Sarah Stubbs spent the most of her life drinking skim or
two-percent milk, but she just converted to full-fat milk after giving birth,
like many Americans who are attempting to maintain their health.
"Lattes made with whole milk, but only if I'm also having a glass of milk. I'll do full milk with yogurt," she told CBS News.
Stubbs claims that she has always believed that drinking low-fat milk is better for her health, while nutritionists assert that consuming full-fat dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese can have significant positive health effects.
According to registered dietitian Alissa Rumsey, "Even though there are more calories, that fat is incredibly satiating so it keeps individuals full for longer and they tend to not eat as much otherwise during the day."
Studies have also shown that fat can reduce the rate at which the body absorbs sugar, hence reducing the chance of developing diabetes.
An analysis of 29 prior research on the effects of
consuming low-fat and full-fat dairy products on health, including over 1
million people worldwide, was published last month in the European Journal of
Epidemiology. It was discovered that consumption of low-fat or full-fat milk,
yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products had no effect on rates of
cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, or fatalities from any cause.
Before making the switch, Rumsey suggests that you should consider your whole diet.
"I definitely wouldn't want to throw in additional saturated fat for someone who is already consuming a lot of red meat products, animal fats, and not a lot of the healthy stuff," she added.
Stubbs claims she hasn't put on any weight and is loving the flavor of whole milk.
